Catch-Up TV on IPTV: Rewind Days of Television (How It Works)
Missed the match? The debate? Last night’s episode? With catch-up TV — one of IPTV’s most underrated features — you scroll back through the TV guide and play programmes that already aired, hours or even days ago. Here’s how it works and how to use it.
What exactly is catch-up?
Catch-up (also called timeshift or replay) means the IPTV server records selected channels continuously and keeps a rolling archive — typically 1 to 7 days. Any programme inside that window can be replayed on demand, like a DVR you never had to configure.
It’s different from VOD: VOD is a curated movie/series library; catch-up is the live channel itself, rewound.
How to use it
In IPTV Smarters Pro
- Open Live TV and look for channels marked with a small clock/
EPGbadge. - Open the channel’s EPG (guide) view.
- Past programmes that are replayable appear highlighted — select one and press play.
In TiviMate
- Open the guide grid.
- Scroll left — into the past. Replayable shows are shown in normal brightness.
- Click and play. TiviMate’s implementation is the smoothest in the business (why we rate it).
On MAG boxes
Channels with the timeshift icon support pause/rewind directly with the remote, and the EPG lets you open past shows (MAG setup guide).
Why some channels have it and others don’t
Recording thousands of channels 24/7 consumes serious server storage, so providers enable catch-up on the channels that matter most — big national networks, major sports and news channels. Small regional channels usually go without. The archive length (1 vs 7 days) is also a provider infrastructure decision: it’s one of the quiet signals separating serious providers from cheap panels.
Requirements
- A provider whose plans include catch-up (ours do — see what’s included)
- An app that supports it: Smarters, TiviMate, IBO Player, and MAG portals all do
- A working EPG — catch-up navigation runs through the guide, so an empty guide means no visible archive
Three practical tips
- Timezone first. If the EPG shows wrong times, catch-up will play the “wrong” programmes — fix the time shift setting in your app.
- Catch-up streams can start slowly (the server fetches from archive) — give it 3–5 seconds before assuming a freeze. Persistent stutter? Buffering guide.
- Fast-forward works inside replays — skip the halftime analysis, go straight to the second half.
Once you’ve lived a week with catch-up, live-TV-only feels broken. Try it free and rewind your first evening.
