What Internet Speed Do You Need for IPTV? (HD, FHD & 4K)

“Is my internet fast enough for IPTV?” is the question we answer most often before someone subscribes. Here are the real numbers — plus the details speed tests don’t tell you.

The short answer

Stream quality Minimum Comfortable
SD (480p) 3 Mbps 5 Mbps
HD (720p) 5 Mbps 8 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) 10 Mbps 15 Mbps
4K / UHD 25 Mbps 35 Mbps

Those are per stream. Two TVs watching 4K simultaneously need ~50–70 Mbps of real capacity.

Speed isn’t everything: stability matters more

A 100 Mbps line that drops out for 2 seconds every few minutes will buffer worse than a rock-solid 20 Mbps line. Three things matter beyond the headline number:

  1. Consistency — run a speed test 3 times across the evening; big swings predict freezing.
  2. Latency/jitter — under 50ms ping is ideal for live TV.
  3. The last few meters — the Wi-Fi hop between router and TV is where most “slow internet” actually lives.

Wi-Fi vs Ethernet (the honest truth)

  • Ethernet: always the answer for the main TV. Zero interference, full speed.
  • 5GHz Wi-Fi: fine in the same room or one wall away.
  • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi: works, but it’s the #1 cause of the evening freezes we troubleshoot — see the full buffering fix list.

How to test properly

  1. Install a speed test app on the streaming device itself (Firestick and Smart TVs have them) — your phone’s result is not your TV’s reality.
  2. Test at the time you actually watch (8–10pm), not Sunday morning.
  3. If the device tests far below your plan, the problem is placement or Wi-Fi band, not your ISP.

“My internet is only 8 Mbps — am I stuck?”

Not at all. Full HD needs 10–15 Mbps, but a good IPTV service offers the same channels in HD (720p) and SD versions, which stream comfortably at 5–8 Mbps. You pick the variant per channel in the app. Plenty of our customers on ADSL watch daily without issues.

Data caps: how much does IPTV consume?

Streaming uses roughly:

  • HD: ~1.5 GB/hour
  • Full HD: ~3 GB/hour
  • 4K: ~7 GB/hour

A heavy watcher (4h/day, Full HD) uses ~360 GB/month. On unlimited home fiber that’s irrelevant; on a capped 4G/5G router plan, do the math first.

Bottom line

If your connection reliably delivers 15 Mbps to the actual TV, you’ll have a flawless Full HD experience; 35 Mbps wired and 4K is effortless. Not sure where you stand? Take a free trial — testing on your own line beats any calculator.
